Poetry Month Fridays – Unfinished Epics: Dream Song

In the still of the night,
when the stars shone dim,
I wandered alone, for I could not rest.
I wandered alone in the shadows.
Not a noise did I hear,
no sweet night-bird’s hymn.
By no sylvan sound was the silence blessed.
By no sylvan sound from the shadows.

Yes the forest’s full voice was stilled that night
till a song stole out of the shadows.

‘Whisper wind and bring my words
to those who sing by the dryads’ pools,
to those who dance in the moonlit glades,
to those who’s eyes can see beneath.
It is time to call the Dreamers.’

In the cool of the night,
while the stars looked o’re,
I listened alone to the words soft fall.
I listened alone in the shadows.
Twas as if I had heard
that sweet song before,
and my heart cried out to follow the call!
Oh my heart cried out in the shadows.

What phantom memories pulled me so,
to the song that wove in the shadows?

‘Whisper wind and send my heart,
to those who sing by the dryads’ pools,
to those who dance in the moonlit glades,
to those who’s eyes can see beneath.
It is time to bring the Dreamers.’

In the heart of the night,
while the stars looked on…

For the second ‘Unfinished Epic’, we have a nebulous sort of fairy story. The idea was part inspired by a friend of mine having a really tough time in college, unable to connect with any fellow creative/whimsical types. I think the main problems I had here were a) working with emotions still too raw for intricate molding and b) not having a really solid idea of the story I was trying to tell. In the end, I moved on and tucked this poem away because I felt stuck.

I cheated a little for this post, and added a couple lines that were missing in the original draft, to make things more cohesive. Even for just two lines I had to take some time and think about who the narrator is, what’s going on with them, and what is the purpose of the song/motivation of the singer. I found I had several possibilities to work with, and that makes me kind of excited. ^-^

For most of my life I've been imagining and playing, making up stories and writing them down. It's my dream to become a published author. Right now I'm working hard to make that happen. ^-^
