It seems I am posting these year-end goal reviews later and later every year. XD As long as they’re in January, they still count, right?
2017 was a lot like 2016: not a lot happened on the blog, but I kept at my writing as much as I could. I also dealt with a lot of depression, and what I’ve recently realized was serious burnout and fatigue from my job. I started taking steps to try and work on that around the end of the year, and managed to get my writing groove back a bit. I have a feeling I failed most of my goals… but honestly, I’m going to forgive myself for that and move forward.
With that said, let’s see how everything stacks up from last year. ^-^
Goal 1. Write at least two short stories – Uh, nope. Not even close on this one. I did get editing done for a couple stories I wrote in 2016, and those two are now out looking for homes. I also started working on ‘Angel Wings’, but didn’t finish it.
Goal 2. Find a home for my unsold stories – Also a no. But, not altogether a negative one. I was planning on putting up some of my older unsold stuff on the blog, but a lot of new markets for SFF have been opening up lately; so I decided to shop them around a bit more instead. I still believe in these stories. We’ll see how I feel about things at the end of this next year. ^-^
Goal 3. Post some shorts/flash fiction on the blog – Finally something I can check off! I still forgot that one flash fiction I’ve been meaning to post forever, but I did get one short story put up. Also, a whole new (to the internet) set of poetry.
Goal 4. Edit “Romaine” – Oh gosh no! With the serious lack of writing going on in general though, not surprising.
Goal 5. Send out more than one story to magazines and such – Yes, 1,000% accomplished on this one! Not only did I start sending out two new shorts, but I was able to take some of my older ones out and shop them around some new markets.
Goal 6. Keep the blog going! – Barely. I mostly posted poetry month and NaNo stuff. Honestly, it’s still way better than my first blog. Having this as a recurring goal has been a helpful motivator.
Goal 7. Read at least HALF of my current unread books – I actually did a lot better with reading in the latter part of the year, but I definitely didn’t make this goal. I did re-sort my unread book list, and so far I’ve read almost 10 whole books from it! That’s pretty great.
Goal 8. Go to some marches, get involved, and be a good White Mage out there – I didn’t make it out to any marches, but I’ve been doing my best to get involved in what’s going on in my crazy country right now. A lot of that involves just being a good listener, and using my tiny platform to amplify the voices of people who don’t usually get heard. I’m learning more about how to be a good ally. This will definitely be a recurring goal for me.
Goal 9. Go to some conventions here in Seattle – We made it to ECCC and PAX last year! Holy cow, they were phenomenal. Also, a bit overwhelming. ^-^ But, I’m super glad we were able to go. Already have our tickets for ECCC this year.
Wow, once again I did way better than I expected. I think I tend to forget personal goals I’ve achieved, and just focus on all the writing things I failed at… Another reason why I really enjoy doing these look-backs every year.
Goals for 2018:
-Write at least two short stories
-Write a story to send to Sword & Sorceress
-Send out more than one story to magazines and such
-Find a home for my unsold stories
-Post some shorts/flash fiction on the blog
-Do actual work on at least one novella-length story
-Keep the blog going!
-Reformat and rearrange the blog
-Read at least HALF of my current unread books
-Go to some marches, get involved, and be a good White Mage out there
-Go to more writing events and meet lots of authors
-Get a new job
Most of these are recurring goals, but I did add a few new ones. Some are VERY specific! Things feel very up-in-the-air this year, and who knows what will happen. I’m gonna do my best though! Let’s all fight the good fight again. Happy New Year. ^-^
