It’s 2017 And I’m Still Alive…

This is about the best thing I can say right now.

My last post was in July of last year, ugh. Honestly, I always get hit by this weird malaise in the summer; and since I didn’t feel like I had a lot to talk about, there didn’t seem to be a reason to keep fighting it. I’m usually myself again when the cold starts to creep back in October, so I figured I’d get back to posting then. I underestimated how much the anniversary of my friend’s death, in October, was going to affect me.

And then November happened…

I’m glad to say that even though I haven’t been able to sit down and write a post for the blog, I have been working on my other writing. At a snail’s pace sometimes, but working nonetheless. ^-^ So, even though it’s way past New Year’s at this point, I’m going to go ahead and do my usual goal review anyhow.

I had kind of a long list for 2016. Let’s see how I did!

Belated Birthday Thoughts: On Being A Failure

So last week I turned 28, which is pretty cool. Over the weekend Lucas and I hosted a birthday shindig – also the first ever shindig in our new place – and it was a huge success! ^-^ And, thanks to having people over, our house is finally clean and set-up, so I feel like we are finally settled in. I think this has already helped my writing, because I got up early on Saturday and spent some time finishing up the first typo-edit of my wizard story. And on Sunday I even remembered to send it out to my betas!

There’s just something about not feeling like there’s an endless list of things to DO, that makes me feel like sitting down and writing. Hopefully I can keep up this momentum. ^-^

Another thing that my birthday brought about: a lot of thoughts about my goals and how far I’ve gone towards achieving them. I’m going into my third year of blogging and seriously pursuing a writing career. Being published, that’s my big goal.

To be honest, I don’t feel like I’m any closer to reaching that goal than I was in 2014. Continue reading

Writing Update!

I had some really long hours at work last month! I managed to keep up with my writing pretty well though, by bringing notebooks to work and writing during my break, as well as attending weekly writers group. ^-^

My big project right now is Romaine. I was hoping to be well into editing at this point, but I’ve only gotten a couple of notes back from my beta readers, so I’ve been waiting hopefully for a few more before I dive in. The notes I have gotten so far have been super helpful though. There are a few loose threads that I apparently didn’t tie up/explain as well as I thought I had. They involve character motivations… one of the things you definitely don’t want people to be confused about!

I’ve made some notes on how I can possibly clarify those plot points, Continue reading

Writing Update

I completed the wizardy short story I was working on! Huzzah! I feel really good about it too, partially because it didn’t turn into a behemoth like the last one. I think it may be less that 6,000 words when it’s all typed up, even less when I edit it. I think that’s going to be a lot more marketable than TMO’s 9,000+ word count. ^-^ One thing I feel odd about is that it still doesn’t have even a working title; that never happens with me.

Another thing I finished up this month is the typo edit for Romaine. It’s all ready for some beta readers to peruse… but I haven’t yet gotten that whole thing organized. It’s pretty simple, I already have a few people who said they’d be interested. I just need to get in contact with all of them and figure whether I want to do this in more of a group setting, maybe with Google docs or Dropbox, or whether I want to stick with the classic approach and just send the story out by email. At this point though, between work and family stuff, I think beta organizing might have to wait till after Christmas. For that matter, so will typing up the second draft of my wizard story.

Another thing I need to get back on track with is sending Take Me On out to magazines Continue reading

Next Steps

Hey all! First off, apologies for my not-posting streak. Further apologies, because I’m afraid that it will probably extend into September. Being apart from my husband, out of place, and the stress of apartment hunting seem to be wreaking havoc with my ability to sit down and just write. However, definitely expect the next Reading Journal in its proper place this coming Monday! ^-^ I will be doing a special set: Light Novels.

And now, current goings-on of my attempts to get published…

The Smallest Things

Flash fiction has been on my mind lately. Mostly in the form of, “I don’t know how to do that!” ^-^ However, recent forays into the box burial ground of my garage have unearthed some startling evidence which strongly contradicts that thought. Among the various articles of yesteryear, I have found my old writer’s club binder from high school. The nostalgia of handwritten sentence and paragraph tandem stories, and other fun games, has been pretty awesome. And, the more I flipped through the pencil-smudged leaflets from that time, the more I realized that pretty much every exercise we did was flash fiction. Continue reading

Writing Update

I’m sorry that my posts have become so spaced out lately. I’m still dealing with after-effects of the lemon life recently sent zinging towards my head. It’s a whole long story, which I might go more into later, but suffice to say that right now apartment/room hunting is taking up a lot of my time. Not to mention the planning for our fortnight trip to Alaska, about two weeks from now, for my friend’s wedding. So, please forgive me if posts continue to be a little sparse going on into June.

In actual writing related news Continue reading
