Belated Birthday Thoughts: On Being A Failure

So last week I turned 28, which is pretty cool. Over the weekend Lucas and I hosted a birthday shindig – also the first ever shindig in our new place – and it was a huge success! ^-^ And, thanks to having people over, our house is finally clean and set-up, so I feel like we are finally settled in. I think this has already helped my writing, because I got up early on Saturday and spent some time finishing up the first typo-edit of my wizard story. And on Sunday I even remembered to send it out to my betas!

There’s just something about not feeling like there’s an endless list of things to DO, that makes me feel like sitting down and writing. Hopefully I can keep up this momentum. ^-^

Another thing that my birthday brought about: a lot of thoughts about my goals and how far I’ve gone towards achieving them. I’m going into my third year of blogging and seriously pursuing a writing career. Being published, that’s my big goal.

To be honest, I don’t feel like I’m any closer to reaching that goal than I was in 2014. Continue reading

Writing Update!

I had some really long hours at work last month! I managed to keep up with my writing pretty well though, by bringing notebooks to work and writing during my break, as well as attending weekly writers group. ^-^

My big project right now is Romaine. I was hoping to be well into editing at this point, but I’ve only gotten a couple of notes back from my beta readers, so I’ve been waiting hopefully for a few more before I dive in. The notes I have gotten so far have been super helpful though. There are a few loose threads that I apparently didn’t tie up/explain as well as I thought I had. They involve character motivations… one of the things you definitely don’t want people to be confused about!

I’ve made some notes on how I can possibly clarify those plot points, Continue reading

Reading Journal 3/16

Welcome again to another Reading Journal! ^-^ Every month I get up to a bit of book rambling; with some basic information on 4 – 5 books I’ve read this year, as well as a quick-and-simple review for each one.

Funny story about the first book of this set: I enjoyed it so much upon first reading it, last year, that I entirely forgot to write down anything about it! XD Luckily, I love re-reading great stories. ^-^

So, let’s take a look!

Unread Books

We finally got all of our books out of their boxes. Currently they are either on a shelf, or stacked on the floor awaiting a shelf/storage place; because Lucas and I have a lot of books. A LOT! ^-^ I was actually surprised how many we had when they were combined. Even more surprising: how many unread books I actually have.

I took a picture of them for you…

Reading Journal 2/16

And now back to our regularly scheduled Reading Journal! ^-^ Every month I get up to a bit of book rambling; with some basic information on 4 – 5 books I’ve read over the last year, as well as a quick-and-simple review for each one. This month is ALL books that I really liked. I read them when I first made my way up to Seattle, in August/September last year, and I think they helped me settle in. ^-^

All-Around Update

I’ve been a bit silent this month. The main reason is that I’ve been working tons of extra hours at my new job. Yep, bringing home the turkey bacon like a boss! ^-^ The side reason is that the Scholar and I have been looking for an apartment, and the stress has been getting to me. Sooooo, lots of Netflix and Legend of Dragoon.

I don’t know if it’s because I am a reader and a writer, but there are times in my life when I can almost see the chapter breaks. I feel a page turn; and then there’s only a short paragraph and a bit of blank page left before the beginning of a whole new chapter. That’s how I felt when I stepped on the little plane that started my family’s move back to California. And, when I walked down the aisle at my wedding. ^-^

It’s how I felt about a week ago, when we signed the lease to our first apartment.

Oh my gosh, we have OUR OWN PLACE! ^o^ Continue reading

New Year’s Goal Review

Even later out of the gate than last year; but at least I’m still in the first week of the year, heh.

2015 has finally made it’s exit. Can’t say I will miss it; but it wasn’t all super bad. ^-^ Time to clean house for the new year by taking a look at how I did with the goals I set myself last January. I know there are a couple I didn’t even get close to; but that’s okay. Setting goals for myself every year is just a tool I use to help keep myself on track, moving in the direction that I want to go. It’s also pretty helpful to be able to track what sorts of things are popping up to give my best intentions a smack-down.

It was a bit of long list last year, but here goes! ^-^ Continue reading

Reading Journal Special: Harry Harrison

Happy New Year’s Eve! ^-^

Since I missed my Reading Journal for November, I thought it would be nice to do a special extra one this month. This special is all about a classic Sci-fi writer that I really think more people should know: Harry Harrison. He was a popular science fiction writer in the 50’s and 60’s, known for his sharp wit and satirical treatment of common space-opera themes. His best known works are the novel ‘Make Room! Make Room!’, on which the movie ‘Soylent Green’ was loosely based, and his ‘Stainless Steel Rat’ series.

I first heard about Harry Harrison during a NaNoWriMo a few years ago. I did one of those “what author do you write like” tests, not expecting any great variety or anything… and was surprised to get Harrison. A quick google search proved enough to intrigue me; and when I bought myself a kindle this year, I just could not resist getting the Harry Harrison Mega-Pack for it. ^-^ A well spent dollar! All of the works covered in this special came from that collection, and I heartily encourage everyone to check it out.

And now, to the stories! Continue reading

Writing Update

I completed the wizardy short story I was working on! Huzzah! I feel really good about it too, partially because it didn’t turn into a behemoth like the last one. I think it may be less that 6,000 words when it’s all typed up, even less when I edit it. I think that’s going to be a lot more marketable than TMO’s 9,000+ word count. ^-^ One thing I feel odd about is that it still doesn’t have even a working title; that never happens with me.

Another thing I finished up this month is the typo edit for Romaine. It’s all ready for some beta readers to peruse… but I haven’t yet gotten that whole thing organized. It’s pretty simple, I already have a few people who said they’d be interested. I just need to get in contact with all of them and figure whether I want to do this in more of a group setting, maybe with Google docs or Dropbox, or whether I want to stick with the classic approach and just send the story out by email. At this point though, between work and family stuff, I think beta organizing might have to wait till after Christmas. For that matter, so will typing up the second draft of my wizard story.

Another thing I need to get back on track with is sending Take Me On out to magazines Continue reading
