A Lingering Smile

Gone, gone away they sing
Lost, naught but a memory
Never to return, my love to me.
Yet I linger, while the world’s asleep,
for you bid me watch for thee.

Oh where away my love?
where hidden, where lost?
Like moonlight on water
you have faded away,
like the mist of dawn,
and I could not hold thee.

Gone, gone away they sing
Lost, but for my memory.
Though you ne’er return, my love, to me
Shall the stars and I our vigil keep?
Yes, I shall watch for thee.

My love I watch for thee.
